Liberty Private Works Returns Private Kitchen Back with a Bang

[02/10/11]

Liberty Private Works was always one of our favourite restaurants and it’s just reopened better than ever. Which is good news all round - there are few things as irritating as one of your choice eateries spiraling downhill. You bring along friends singing its praises only to spend the whole meal apologizing. You take it as a personal affront on your taste.

Having moved to Stanley Street the new LPW seats about 20 people around a U-shaped open kitchen. They only serve a 9.5-course tasting menu (yes, 9.5) priced at HK$800 but it’s worth every penny. Serving French/Asian fusion, the standout dish was tuna with truffle and gold leaf which you’ll enjoy even if don’t share J-Lo’s love of bling.

Perched on the 26th floor (you have to take the service elevator to get up there) the setting is dominated by the huge, floor to ceiling windows. All the cooking, meanwhile, takes place in front of you with each course introduced by Rocky, the maître‘d, the Sly Stallone of waitering. The overall quality of the service is excellent, leaving you as content as a T8 on a Monday morning.

They don’t have a liquor license yet (they expect to get one this week) so it’s BYO for now. Our one criticism is they played the same CD over and over again but maybe that says more about our lack of conversation than the restaurant because we loved it. And you will too.

Liberating.
