Allotinabox DIY Urban Veggies Clever Kit to Grow Vegetables at Home

[26/01/12]

We live in a city of grey, walled skyscrapers so urban greening is appealing; if a little gimmicky. What’s the point having a couple of cacti when you can’t see more than five metres in front of you in the first place? Allotinabox, however, actually provides something green and consumable. They’re small kits for growing vegetables at home and whilst you might scoff at the idea – rolling up your shirt to pick your own leeks in Mid-Levels sounds like a utopian dream.

The young British company offers four varieties including: Limited Edition (£12.99), Bi Annual Supply (£21.99), Seasonal Supply (£49.99) and the Super Seed box (£10.99). With the Seasonal Supply package, for instance, they’ll send you one box per quarter and you can expect organic seeds as well as other little tools. The Grow Wheel Guide is particularly helpful because it tells you when to 'sow and harvest', although that sounds like you’re dealing with 1,000 acres rather than 30cm on Robinson Rd.

Shipping to Hong Kong's only a few pounds (depending on the size of the box) and in terms of veggies you can expect the likes of spring onions, parsnips, carrots, leaf spinach, rocket and more. On top of that you’re given some 3-ply organic jute twine as well as a set of plant tags to help you structure your veggie patch. The other thing that’s particularly cool is Allotinabox's design. Their aesthetics are satisfying and that’s what this whole product is about. It’s satisfying. You’re not going to feed the Pearl River Delta but you are going to nourish the soul.

Pity the vegetables brought up in Hong Kong.
