Some like it hot
Spicilious Sichuanese at Si Jie
Are you man enough to handle the spiciest of spices? Black pepper – piece of cake. Jalapeño – not bad. But what about the ultimate – Sichuan peppercorn? These babies hurt so good, you’re going to cry your eyes out for more.
Quench your fiery desire for all things spicy at Si Jie, a palate-numbing speakeasy that serves the best Sichuanese home cooking in town. Behind this house of spice is chef Si Jie, which means “fourth sister” in Mandarin. Originally from Sichuan, she can whip up authentic dishes, such as “dan dan” peanut noodles, fish-flavoured pork shreds and dry-fried crispy beef. Our advice: Best to bring a Chinese-speaking friend to help you with the ordering. Admittedly, not much can be said of its stripped down décor (with panda posters plastered on the windows), but the food and energy of the place more than make up for it. Especially so, when Si Jie (after she’s finished in the kitchen) dares each table to down beer faster than she can (and she ain’t easy to beat). You’ll have such a good ol’ time, you’d think you were dining in a rowdy (Sichuanese) beer hall.
